WINTER ATTRACTIONS

Downhill ski at Gore Mountain - A short 5 minute drive to the lifts. A shuttle is anticipated for the 2009-10 season. Gore Mountain www.goremountain.com boasts 2100’ vertical, 11 lifts, 75 trails and 95% snowmaking, Gore is a premier ski area of the northeast and is opening a new face of the mountain "Burnt Ridge" with a new quad chair and 4 new trails. The North Creek Ski Bowl is within offers night skiing and tubing. Whiteface Mountain www.whiteface.com  is 1 hour away and West Mountain www.skiwestmountain.com  is 45 minutes south.

Cross-country ski and snowshoe at Garnet Hill www.garnet-hill.com , Cunninghams Ski Barn www.cunninghamsskibarn.com , and others including unlimited acres access on state land. Check out www.adk.org for maps and guidebooks. We personally enjoy skiing up the old (unused in winter) railroad tracks immediately behind the Lodge.

Snowmobiling - If you have your own machines join the North Warren Trailblazers at www.northernwarrentrailblazers.snowclubs.com for miles and miles of groomed trails close by… If you would like to rent “sleds” there are numerous local options for guided 1 and 2 hour trips for single or double riders. Explore both beautiful pine woods and/or open frozen lake terrain…

Explore the Lake Placid area
- home to two winter olympics. www.lakeplacid.com It’s a beautiful one-hours drive north. Window shop down Main Street, stop for lunch at any number of great luncheon spots, go to the top of the ski jumps and watch the ski jumpers or ariel freestyle skiers practice or compete. Check out the luge or bobsledding going. For the adventurer, take a bobsled ride yourself…. www.mountvanhovenburg.com. Lots of places to stop and walk/hike at trail heads along the way!

Heritage and History-The history of the Adirondacks is as diverse as its geography. A battleground through three wars, the turf of loggers and miners, the vacation destination of Gilded Age magnates and home to two Winter Olympic Games, the depth and breadth of the region's heritage is only matched by its glorious scenery. You'll find forts, museums, historic homes and "Great Camps," excursion railroads and even sunken wrecks in the Adirondacks. Events ranging from Woodsmen's Field Days to the No-Octane Regatta to a French and Indian War Encampment bring history to life.
 
Shopping- enjoy shopping at the small shops on Main Street- antiques, home decorations, and more! (favorites include Foothills and Hudson River Trading Co!)  For even more shopping stop in at the outlets just south of Lake George or Bolton Landing or Saratoga. In Warrensburg, enjoy the many antique shops.

Foodies - be sure to stop in at Nettle Meadow Goat Farm and Cheese Company www.nettlemeadow.com and Oscar’s Smokehouse in Warrensburg. The area offers numerous excellent dining options from trendy wine bars (barVino is right next to The Alpine Lodge!) to casual eateries, to fine dining.

Exhibits, Museums and Galleries – There are many museums, galleries, and historic sites from The French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Caution: many museums are subject to seasonality- check if the option is available for the specific season you are interested in before traveling to a sometimes remote location.

Visit a “Great Camp”- The Great Camp Sagamore www.greatcampsagamore.org. is in Raquette lake (close to The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake) .Take a guided tour at The Great Camp Sagamore 27 authentic buildings of the wilderness estate of the Vanderbuilt Family from 1901-1954. Now a National Historic Landmark dedicated to education, interpretation and historic preservation. Take a 2-hour guided tour offered only at specific times. Our c buildings rvation.
The Santanoni Preserve www.newcombny.com/newsantanonigreatcamp.html  is the largest tract of land donated to the Adirondack Preserve in the last decade. The 12,500 acre preserve is home to the Santanoni Lodge built from 1892-93, owned at that time by Robert C. Pruyn, a prominent Albany banker and businessman. "As one of the earliest examples of the Adirondack Great Camps, Camp Santanoni was regarded at the time of its completion as the grandest of all such Adirondack Camps to date" (Adirondack Architectural Heritage). Great Camp Santanoni, now owned by New York State and incorporated into the State Forest Preserve, is open to the public. In the summer, visitors can walk or bike 4.7 miles into the camp or take advantage of a beautiful, flat 10-mile ski trip.

SPRING - SUMMER - FALL ATTRACTIONS

Upper Hudson Railroad-enjoy a scenic ride on North Creek’s historic railway. See an original turntable and the Depot Museum. Special events include train robberies, lunch excursions, fall foliage and Thomas the Train and Polar Express.

Museums and Galleries- The Adirondack Museum  www.adkmuseum.org in Blue Mountain Lake is on the “not to be missed” list but numerous options abound. Open end of May-Late October. If you are thinking about heading up to Blue Mountain Lake think about taking a guided tour at The Great Camp Sagamore (see Great Camps below). Cruises: Take a scenic ride on beautiful Lake George. Hiking- Everywhere in the Adirondacks includes great hiking and numerous official state trailheads. We would love to suggest options for you that range from a lovely scenic walk right out the back door to an all-out full days hike up to a peak. Some favorites of ours: Crane Mountain, Blue Ledges, Pharoah Mountain Wilderness Region, Buck Mountain, Tongue Mountain and the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Region. www.adk.com

Golfing- There are numerous beautiful courses within ½ hour’s drive of North Creek that range from very “local” 9 hole courses (www.croninsgolfresort.com)  to the famed Donald Ross course at The Sagamore. www.thesagamore.com

Canoeing and Kayaking- the area is known for its waterways. Lake George Village-from miniature golf, to amusement parks, go-karts, lake cruises on beautiful 32-mile long Lake George , visit Lake George Village.

Saratoga- of course the famous horse racing flat track is open through all of August, but the magnificent city of Saratoga is fun to visit year –round.
